Swiss Army Man stars Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano, and it is probably the most underrated movie of last year. But why watch a film about a corpse that passes gas?. But just hang on for a second! The movie is much more that just the corpse.
It is the story of a man (Dano’s Hank Thompson) who’s at the end of his rope and who is almost about to hang himself on the other end of that much rope! He’s stuck on an island for a while and has tried every way to get back to no avail.
Then suddenly, along comes this farting corpse that could be the key to him getting off the island. What follows is the tale of how one man rediscovers his love for life and learns to appreciate the things around him. He can see his life from a new perspective which is something that we all could do this new year.
We may not be marooned on islands, but modern lives are pretty lonely affairs. People tend to get caught up in routines and build structures around themselves without ever knowing how they will get out. Eventually, we stand at a crossroads where a decision needs to be made about which way our life will flow.
Swiss Army Man is very similar to this because it’s one man’s trip through purgatory to arrive back at the small tidbits that made his life meaningful. And while he had a corpse as a companion, most of us are lucky to have friends and family who often help us along.
But emotionally ample and philosophical reason isn’t only why you should watch this movie. There’s also the fact that it is hilarious! Radcliffe and Dano form a pair that gets into the weirdest situations and gets off them through equally strange and silly solutions. We all need a good laugh now and then, and this has large doses of that.
The final reason to watch Swiss Army Man is simply to support indie cinema, the home of some of the weirdest, most heartfelt and real movies made today. We all love the big blockbusters and comic book movies, and they have their place, but there should also be room for movies that are trying to be something different.
So, if the first few days of the New Year haven’t been very active or rosy for you, you can give Swiss Army Man a try. It will take you on a journey and help you find the light, your light, once again.
